A scam in the form of a winning Spanish lottery ticket is hitting residents in Morgan and Limestone counties, according to the Better Business Bureau. It attempts to get recipients’ bank account information so it can access accounts and steal money, explained Tricia Pruitt, vice president of the North Alabama BBB. “We know of a couple who have lost several thousand dollars paying fees to get the money they want,” she said. It comes to residents via a letter that says it represents the El Gordo de la Primitiva lottery, which is a real foreign lottery.

But the way the letter was written, it makes it sound that they were chosen randomly from some computer¬†conveyancer melbourne¬†system. “It’s the type of thing that somebody would think is legitimate because of the way it looks,” she said. The letter tells recipients that they are among 11 international winners of 785,510 in Euro dollars and they have until April 13 to claim the prize.

The letter also asks recipients to “keep this award from public notice until your claim has been processed and your funds remitted to you. “It says this is a security measure to avoid double claims. As part of the claim process, it asks for personal information, including bank name, bank account number and bank routing number. Pruitt said she received five complaints about the letter Wednesday, including one from a local credit union that had a customer try to open a checking account to receive the money.

A long-standing desegregation lawsuit filed against Decatur City Schools may go to trial the third week of June, according to an order released Tuesday. The case was scheduled for a January trial, but a newly appointed federal judge postponed the trial until he could become familiar with the case. Superintendent Sam Houston said he welcomed the new trial date.
